FinOps for AI · Level 3

Shape the AI bill before it exists.

Level 1 made AI spend visible. Level 2 planned and budgeted it. Level 3 moves FinOps into the decisions that set AI cost behaviour in the first place: how systems are architected and placed, how workloads are optimized, when rate commitments pay off, how AI tools are sourced, and how unit economics ties spend to value. Built on the FinOps Framework capabilities for AI.

The Level 3 roadmap
01
Architecting & Workload Placement
Model choice, buy versus build, where each workload runs
02
AI Workload Optimization
Five cost layers, and the levers in each one
03
AI Rate Optimization
When a commitment saves money, and when it adds risk
04
Licensing & SaaS Decisions
AI tools that stay visible, owned and reversible
05
Unit Economics for AI Workloads
What you pay for one useful result

By the time the bill arrives, the big decisions are already made.

A $750K GPU request with no alternative on the table
The newest model on the newest hardware, by default. A two-week test found 96 % of the quality at the old price.
A 30 % discount that costs more than it saves
A 12-month commitment signed at today’s volume, just before prompt trimming halves usage.
A $9,000 AI tool that really costs $32,000
Model invoices, SaaS add-ons and forgotten pilots never show up on the cloud dashboard.
What you'll learn

From visibility to value: the five capabilities that set AI cost behaviour.

01
Architecting & workload placement
The iron triangle of quality, speed and cost, buy versus build, four architectural paths, augmentation strategies, training versus inference, managed or self-managed, portability and architecture KPIs.
02
AI workload optimization
Time, usage and rate, the five layers of AI cost and their levers, six personas, mapping a workload in five days, early onboarding, sustainability as efficiency, optimization KPIs.
03
AI rate optimization
Why AI rates are harder, four pricing models, provisioned throughput and vacancy, readiness signals, before and after a commitment, effective savings and rate KPIs.
04
Licensing & SaaS decisions
Composite AI stacks, sourcing paths and where spend appears, licences nobody tracks, surface, own, integrate and close the loop, renewals and licensing KPIs.
05
Unit economics for AI workloads
Six AI units, cost plus outcome, the right unit for each question, ranges, benchmarks and guardrails, the three layers of AI value and unit economics KPIs.

Questions

Does the course include the official FinOps for AI certification?
No. The official FinOps Certified: AI Value credential is awarded by the FinOps Foundation through its own training path and exam on learn.finops.org. This is an independent Level 3 course built on the FinOps Framework capabilities for AI, focused on the practices you apply at work.
How is the course organised?
An introduction and five chapters, 100 short animated video lessons in total, with one running scenario (Calloway Retail) and KPIs in every chapter, a 10-question quiz after each chapter and a timed 50-question review quiz at the end. It is self-paced, and your progress is saved on any device.
What do I need to know first?
Level 1 and Level 2, or equivalent experience: you should be comfortable reporting AI spend and with planning, forecasting and budgeting it. You do not need a machine learning or data science background.
Do I get a certificate?
Yes. When you mark every lesson as complete, you can download a Cloud Institute Canada certificate of completion with your name and the course title, ready to add to LinkedIn. It is separate from the official FinOps Certified: AI Value credential, which the FinOps Foundation awards.
How long do I have access?
For life, including future updates to the course.
Can I get a refund?
Because the course is digital and access is immediate, purchases are final once access is given, except where Québec consumer protection law provides otherwise. If anything is wrong (you cannot access the course, it is not what was described, or you were charged in error), email support@cloudinstitute.ca and we will put it right. Details in our Terms.
Can I enrol several people from my team?
Yes. For group access, see For Teams or write to support@cloudinstitute.ca.
